Officially, Nigeria has joined other 38 African coutries in banning same-sex marriage. presindent Goodluck Ebele Jonathan yesterdy 13.01.2014 signed the bill banning same sex marriage.
According to Reuben Abati who comfirmed the news, the president signed the bill not only because he, Jonathan condemned the act but because it is in line with the wishes of more than 90 percent Nigerians. Majority of Nigerians awaited for a very long time to see if Jonathan will be bold enough to sign the bill.
Accodrding to Vangaurd, Many organisation such as Amnesty International urged Jonathan to reject the bill calling it “discriminatory” and warning of its “Catastrophic” consequences for Nigerian Gay community.
A lot of comments and disscussions accross the social media in Nigeria such as Facebook, Twitter and various blog comments show that this is a welcome development.
Abdulaziz Makampolo Mba, has this to say: “God will punish Any Nation that permits this so called same sex marriage, if they want to marry even pig they should go ahead, but Government should never give them any right, for it is against Lord God Almighty, and against we human, even against those involved, they knows they are just possessed by powerful demons some of them have tried but could not be delivered”
Christopher Ihegazierem, M.D. at Christo Ventures Nig. applauded Jonathan by saying “nice Mr President,we are africans and we love our cultures”
Globally, the debate continue to arise over whether same sex couples should be allowed marriage.
Now that Nigerian Government has made it clear that same sex marriage is not welcome, our religious organisations should join the crusade.
Question: “What does the Bible say about gay marriage / same sex marriage?”
Answer: While the Bible does address homosexuality, it does not explicitly mention gay marriage/same-sex marriage. It is clear, however, that the Bible condemns homosexuality as an immoral and unnatural sin. Leviticus 18:22 identifies homosexual sex as an abomination, a detestable sin. Romans 1:26-27 declares homosexual desires and actions to be shameful, unnatural, lustful, and indecent. 1st Corinthians 6:9 states that homosexuals are unrighteous and will not inherit the kingdom of God. Since both homosexual desires and actions are condemned in the Bible, it is clear that homosexuals “marrying” is not God’s will, and would be, in fact, sinful.
Wherever marriage is mentioned in the bible, it is between a male and a female. The first mention of marriage, Genesis 2:24, describes it as a man leaving his parents and being united to his wife. In passages that contain instructions regarding marriage, such as 1 Corinthians 7:2-16 and Ephesians 5:23-33, the Bible clearly identifies marriage as being between a man and a woman. Biblically speaking, marriage is the lifetime union of a man and a woman, primarily for the purpose of building a family and providing a stable environment for that family.
With the above scriptural backup, Do you think Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to bann same sex marriage is a welcome development?
Leviticus 20:13 – If a man also lies with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.
10 years in prison is the punishment, do you think we should have gone with what was stipulated in Leviticus 20:13 which is death penalty? would it be too harsh?
